Nicola Labanca

(Florence, *1957) is Full Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Siena, where he also teaches European Expansion History. His research focuses on the relationship between war, armed forces, and society in unified Italy, on total war in the 20th century, and on the political, social and cultural history of Italian colonial expansion. He received the Premio Feltrinelli per la Storia 2025 from the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. His recent publications include Oltremare. Storia dell’espansione coloniale italiana (Bologna, il Mulino, 2025, second edition) and Studi storici sul colonialismo italiano. Bibliografia (2000–2024) (Milan, FrancoAngeli, 2024). He edited the publication Una diversa narrazione del passato coloniale. Studi su Angelo Del Boca (Milan, FrancoAngeli, 2024). For earlier works, he received the Premio Società italiana di storia militare (1992), the Premio Acqui Storia(1994), the Premio Società italiana per lo studio della storia contemporanea (1994), the Premio Cherasco Storia (2003), and the Premio Minturnae (2019).
